WAYS WE SUPPORT

At Third+Bird, we are all about making a tangible difference in two areas: people and communities.

We strive to positively impact the lives of our local artisans, growers, small business owners and our valued shoppers who are looking for unique artisanal goods. But we don’t stop there…

We believe it’s important to make a difference in our global community, too. Third+Bird creates full circle events, supporting local and global artisans in ways that really do make a difference.

We are so proud to partner with the Nepali Women’s Co-op in the Himalayan Region of Nepal. A portion of proceeds from every market create opportunities in the lives of the women in this co-op.

You’re probably wondering why the Nepali Women’s Co-Op…

The co-op works with women who have financial challenges and those at risk for human trafficking. These women are empowered through education and micro-enterprise, such as a tailoring school that creates opportunities for themselves and their families. The co-op also sponsors girls in the community to attend primary and secondary school. Finally, the co-op sponsors retreats to show support, care, and rejuvenation into the lives of the women they work alongside.

For every $500 donated to the Nepali Women’s Co-op, a woman receives a sewing machine and admission to a 3-month tailoring school program. The women even gets to keep the sewing machine, meaning she now has the skills and equipment to be a sustainable entrepreneur.

As an added plus, the charity does not keep any administration costs, meaning every cent of the donation goes directly to the women, cultivating beautiful results.

Third+Bird vendors love the opportunity to support such an incredible cause—each vendor from our Spring and Christmas market provides a raffle item with all proceeds going directly to the Nepali Women’s Co-op. Funds are raised from the raffle table, cookie table, Nepali goods table and donations from Third+Bird. Between, between our Spring + Christmas Markets combined, over $26,500 was raised! These women’s lives are changed forever thanks to you!

Supporting marginalized women + families in Nepal will always be the core charity we support and partner with for our Spring + Christmas markets. However, introducing our pop ups allows us to look at local charities that we can partner with and support. Currently we have partnered with Villa Rosa + Bear Clan Patrol

BEAR CLAN PATROL

The Bear Clan Patrol is a community based solution to crime prevention, providing a sense of safety, solidarity and belonging to both its members and to the communities they serve.

This is achieved in a non-violent, non-threatening, non-judgmental and supportive manner primarily through relationship building and reconciliation.

The Patrol demonstrates a way of being that works in harmony with the broader community rather than in conflict with it and in a relationship that encourages rather than seeking to defeat leadership as it emerges at a local level.

The Bear Clan draws its direction solely from our traditional philosophies and practices.

The concept behind the Bear Clan Patrol, is community people working with the community to provide personal security in the inner city in a non-threatening, non-violent, non-judgmental and supportive way.

The Patrol operates out of the Bear Clan Den located at 584 Selkirk Ave in the city’s north end.

Currently there are well over 1500 men and women involved with the Patrol on a volunteer basis.

VILLA ROSA

Villa Rosa is a safe haven for single young pregnant women.  The majority of our residents are in their teens but there is no age restriction for our services.  Women live at Villa Rosa free of charge.  Our funding comes from the Province of Manitoba, the United Way, First Nation communities, and many other foundations and donors.

We provide a place to live, individual counselling, life skills, education and community follow-up to 300 women every year.  Last year we were able to accommodate 87 expectant mothers, and each of those was given the chance to finish her high school education as well as access to scholarships for post secondary education.  Occupancy is generally over 90% capacity of our 25 spaces.  An average stay is 3 – 4 months.
